Leila Schneps (born December 22, 1961 in Waltham (Massachusetts) ) is an American mathematician and writer who lives in France and works with number theory and arithmetic algebraic geometry. She published detective novels under the pen name Catherine Shaw.

Life

Schneps studied mathematics (and German studies) at Harvard University (Radcliffe College) with a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1983 and received his doctorate in 1985 from the University of Paris XI under John Coates (Thèse 3eme cycle: The μ-invariant of p-adic L function attached to elliptic curves with complex multiplication ), with the second part of the doctorate (Thèse de Doctorat) with Guy Henniart at the University of Paris-Süd 1990 ( p-adic L-functions and Galois theory ). In 1985/86 she was Maitre de Conference in Grenoble, 1986/87 at the University of Paris XI and 1989/80 at the University of Paris VII. She completed her habilitation in 1993 at the Université de Franche-Comté (On some aspects of inverse Galois theory) and has been researching for the CNRS since 1991 (from 2005 as Research Director). From 2000 she was at the Institut de Mathématiques de Jussieu ( University of Paris VI ).

She also deals with the correct use of mathematics (especially statistics) in courtrooms and wrote a book about it with her daughter Coralie Colmez (* 1988). She is a member of the Bayes and Law Research Group. She also translates French mathematics books into English (e.g. Claire Voisin 's book on Hodge's theory (Volume 2), the book on Galois theory by Jean-Pierre Escofier , the Grothendieck- Serre correspondence and the autobiography of Laurent Schwartz ).

Schneps was a visiting scientist at the ETH Zurich, at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn (1988/89), at Harvard, at the MSRI and the Institute for Advanced Study . She deals with p-adic L-functions, Galois theory, geometric Galois theory and inverse Galois theory.

She is a founding member of the Grothendieck Circle and contacted the mathematician Alexander Grothendieck, who lived in seclusion in the Pyrenees, in the early 2000s with Pierre Lochak (her future husband). She gave a series of lectures on Grothendieck 's children's drawings (dessins d´enfants) (with the font of the same name by Grothendieck ).

Schneps has four children.
