Xavier Buff (born December 16, 1971 ) is a French mathematician who studies dynamic systems .

Buff received his doctorate in 1996 under Adrien Douady at the University of Paris-South (Points fixe de renormalization). As a post-doctoral student , he was HC Wang Assistant Professor at Cornell University in 1997/98 . From 1998 he was maitre de conférences at the University of Toulouse (Paul Sabatier), completed his habilitation there in 2006 (Disques de Siegel et ensembles de Julia d'aire strictement positive) and was professor there from 2008.

In 2010 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Hyderabad (Quadratic Julia Sets with Positive Area, with Arnaud Chéritat ). In 2006 he received the Prix Leconte of the Academie des Sciences with Arnaud Chéritat for their joint work on Julia sets with positive measure (they proved the existence of quadratic polynomials whose Julia set has positive Lebesgue measure). In 2008, he received a European Research Council Starting Grant with Chéritat and Pascale Roesch . In 2009 he became a member of the Institut Universitaire de France.
