Lenford "Steve" Harvey († November 30, 2005 in Kingston ) was a Jamaican social worker who campaigned for the support of AIDS sufferers and the acceptance of homosexuality . He coordinated the AIDS Support for Life project in Jamaica . He was murdered on the eve of World AIDS Day .

Steve Harvey began his commitment to the Jamaican AIDS Support for Life organization in 1997. In 2005 he was appointed project coordinator for Jamaica by LACCASO (Latin America and Caribbean Council of AIDS Service Organizations) .

At the beginning of the crime, Harvey's shared apartment had been robbed. The robbers asked residents if it was true that they were homosexual. The two roommates denied it, but Harvey admitted it. He was forced to move valuables from the house to the perpetrators' vehicle. They took him away and was found shot two hours later.

The trigger was homophobia . The background also includes the fact that homosexuality is not socially recognized in Jamaica, is considered a crime and sex between men can be punished with up to ten years in prison. The United Nations and the Canadian Labor Congress, among others, have demanded an investigation into the matter. In April 2006, four people were arrested and charged with murder.
