Lenné is the name of a family whose members have exercised the office of electoral court gardener for many generations.

The generations

  • Augustin Lenné and Anna Barbara Caron

Augustin Lenné came to Poppelsdorf near Bonn from the nearby diocese of Liège before 1669 as court gardener under Duke Maximilian Heinrich of Bavaria . Maximilian Heinrich von Bayern was elector and archbishop of Cologne from 1650 and also prince-bishop of Liège. For October 4, 1669, the parish register of St. Martin's parish church records the birth of a daughter of Augustin Lenné and his wife Anna Barbara Caron. In 1675 a son was born to the couple, whose godfather and namesake was the elector himself. An indication of the esteem the Elector showed the gardener family. In addition to Poppelsdorf, the Lennés were also active as court gardeners in Bonn, Röttgen , Cologne and Brühl .

  • Maximilian Heinrich Lenné and Anna Gertrud Esch

Maximilian Heinrich Lenné also became court gardener in Poppelsdorf under the subsequent Elector Joseph Clemens of Bavaria . For the year 1699, the parish church book reports on the marriage of “Max Lenné, Hortulanus in Arce Serenissimi” to Anna Gertrud Esch from Poppelsdorf. A stone cross on Clemens-August-Platz in Poppelsdorf still reminds of the couple today. Johann Hubert, the couple's eldest son, became a court gardener in Poppelsdorf. Johann Kunibert, another son, also worked as an electoral court gardener in Bonn from 1748. He looked after the courtyard garden, the former electoral pleasure palace " Vinea Domini " and the tree nursery.

Peter Joseph Lenné
  • Johann Kunibert Lenné and Maria Agnes Müller

The court gardening tradition continues through Johann Kunibert Lenné, who married Maria Agnes Müller on April 15, 1752. From 1748 until his death in 1787, Johann Kunibert worked as an electoral court gardener in Bonn. Their daughter Johanna Gertrud marries the electoral court gardener Josef Clemens Weyhe . The son Peter Joseph Lenné d. Ä. from 1788 held the position of head gardener in Brühl and head of the Botanical Garden of the University of Bonn , where he also taught botany. In his Poppelsdorfer area of responsibility he was represented from 1791 by his younger brother Johann Heinrich Joseph.

  • Peter Josef Lenné the Elder Ä. and Anna Catharina Pottgieter

Peter Joseph Lenné the Elder Ä. marries Anna Catharina Pottgieter on June 21, 1786. The long gardening tradition of the Lenné family comes to an end with their son Peter Joseph , who later became the royal Prussian General Garden Director and probably the best-known member of the Lenné family. His marriage to Friederike Voss, the daughter of a Potsdam court gardener, remained childless.
