Location of the Lenzer Wische

The Lenzer Wische (Wische = Low German for meadow) is a sparsely populated wetland in the north-west of Brandenburg . It includes the municipality of Lenzerwische and the part of the city of Lenzen (Elbe) south of the Löcknitz .

It is located in the Elbe-Brandenburg River Landscape Biosphere Reserve between the Löcknitz and Elbe rivers . In their course towards the north-west, both rivers approach the south-eastern city limits of Lenzen at around 500 meters, but from there the Elbe makes a southerly curve to Gorleben . Only south of Dömitz did the Löcknitz flow into the Elbe until 1973. During floods, the river also regularly poured through its tributary into the meadows and pastures of the damp lowland. The terps of historic farmhouses are a reminder of the floods .

At the end of the 1960s, the wetland, which had previously been dependent on the water level of two rivers, was drained at great expense. In order to increase agricultural yields, the Lenzer Wische was crossed with drainage ditches and the Löcknitz estuary was moved twelve kilometers near Wehningen . At the site of the former Löcknitz estuary there is a pumping station which regulates the water level of the Lenzer Wische.

The drainage, the creation of large agricultural areas and the cultivation of the soil meant the loss of their habitat for many animals and plants. With a partial rewetting after the fall of the Wall , this development could be reversed.

A 2200- hectare part of the Lenzer Wische was flooded during the Elbe floods on January 21, 2011 in order to accelerate the drainage of the Löcknitz. Coordinates: 53 ° 5 ′ 0 ″  N , 11 ° 25 ′ 0 ″  E

In Tamara Ramsay 's childrens book, The Little Dott 's Wonderful Rides and Adventures (1941) , which is set in the Prignitz , the Lenzer Wische appears as a green island between the Löcknitz and Elbe rivers. Based on Nils Holgersson's wonderful journey through Sweden by Selma Lagerlöf, the book describes the “excursion” of twelve-year-old Dorothea, known as Dott, on the wings of a heron. The journey begins in Lenzer Wische near Mödlich .
