Paula Becker House
The Paula Becker house in Bremen is a former home of the family of the artist Paula Modersohn-Becker , where she spent a large part of her life. It is located at Schwachhauser Heerstraße 23 (at that time "Schwachhauser Chaussee 23"), in the outward direction on the right side of the road at 0.2 km immediately behind the railway tunnel.
The angled house with a veranda, outside staircase, protruding gable and a large garden was built in 1861. The 2000 m² property belonged to the Prussian Railway Administration, which set up an official apartment in the house. The father of Paula Becker was employed as an engineer on the railroad, and his family moved in 1888 from Dresden to Bremen and lived in this house. Paula Becker lived here until 1899 - i.e. until the age of 23 - and set up her first studio. Artistic life in Bremen at that time was very lively and through friendships with the mother, there was close contact with the artistic circles in Bremen, so that the Becker family played a lively role. In addition to her teacher training in Bremen 1893–1895, Paula took private lessons in painting.
On the occasion of the painter's 125th birthday on February 8, 2001, the Bremen Women's Museum Association proposed that the painter's former home in Schwachhauser Heerstraße be appropriately honored.
In 2003 the lawyer Betty and Heinz Thies bought the house, which in the meantime was in dire need of renovation. It has been lovingly restored and opened to the public again in November 2007 in time for the 100th anniversary of Paula Modersohn-Becker's death. Various exhibitions and events take place, for example readings from the diaries and letters of Paula Modersohn-Becker.
