List of rose varieties |
The shrub rose Leonardo da Vinci was crossed by the French rose breeder Meilland from the parent varieties 'Sommerwind' × ('Milrose' × 'Rosamunde') and introduced in 1994. It is named after the Italian universal genius and Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519). The name is a synonym for the Florentine era in the range of the breeder's so-called Romantica roses.
The cyclamen pink, bowl-shaped rose petals are in clusters of 5–15 and are very double, so that the inner petals are arranged in rosettes, sometimes even quartered like an English rose . The rose blooms almost continuously, but the scent is almost completely absent. The growth of the plant is bushy, up to 2 m high in warm areas. The dark, glossy leaves are robust. When it rains, the rainwater collects in the not fully open, distinctly bowl-shaped flowers. When wither, the petals are poorly thrown off and turn brown-pink, so that 'Leonardo da Vinci' is best suited for warm, dry areas.
