Sidney McNeill "Sid" Gutierrez (born June 27, 1951 in Albuquerque , New Mexico , USA ) is a former American astronaut .
education
Gutierrez graduated from Valley High School in Albuquerque in 1969. He then studied aerospace engineering at the United States Air Force Academy and graduated in 1973 with a bachelor's degree . In 1977 he earned a Masters in Management from Webster College .
US Air Force
He joined the US Air Force in 1977 , was trained as a test pilot in 1981 and then flew mostly T-38 , F-15 and F-16 machines .
He has completed over 4500 flight hours on more than 30 different aircraft.
NASA
In 1984 he was elected to NASA's 10th astronaut group and trained as a pilot for a year.
He was one of the liaison speakers ( Capcom ) for STS-42 , STS-45 , STS-46 , STS-49 and STS-52 .
STS-40
Gutierrez had his first and shortest space mission as a pilot of the STS-40 mission with the Space Shuttle Columbia . This mission was postponed several times due to various defects on the space shuttle.
It was the fifth Spacelab mission, the first to be exclusively about life sciences. The most important experiment was Spacelab Life Sciences-1. Physiological studies were carried out on humans, 30 rodents and thousands of tiny jellyfish. Of the 18 studies, ten dealt with humans, seven with rodents and one with jellyfish.
STS-59
During his second and last space mission, Gutierrez was on board the Endeavor as the mission's commander . The aim of the mission was to use X-SAR radar to make recordings of the earth in order to localize climate changes and environmental pollution.
After the space flights
In 1994 he left NASA and the US Air Force to work at Sandia National Laboratories , which are part of the Lockheed Group.
