Leonid Grigorjewitsch Iwaschow ( Russian Леонид Григорьевич Ивашов ; born August 31, 1943 in Frunze (city) , today Bishkek , Kyrgyzstan ) is a Russian military expert . He was one of the most important military strategists in Russia after the fall of the Wall. He is President of the Academy for Geopolitical Problems and is considered a leading specialist in geopolitics, conflict research, international relations and military history. He has the rank of Colonel General .

Professional career

In 1964 Iwaschow graduated from the Tashkent Command University, in 1974 the Frunze Military Academy. Since 1976 he served in the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR. He was head of the Secretariat of Defense Ministers of the USSR and Marshals Dmitri Ustinov (1976-1984) and Sergei Sokolow (1984-1987). 1987–1992 he was head of the Department of Defense's assets.

1992–1996 he was Secretary of the Council of Defense Ministers of the CIS member countries.

In August 1999 he became Chief of Staff for the coordination of military cooperation between the member countries of the CIS. 1996–2001 he was the head of the Main Department for International Military Cooperation of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation . In this function he spoke out against NATO's eastward expansion. He is also said to have been one of the organizers of the Russian advance to Pristina in June 1999. After his appointment as defense minister, Sergei Ivanov proposed in June 2001 Ivashov to retire. After his release, he received posts in academia and veterans' associations.

In December 2011, he announced his candidacy for the 2012 presidential election in Russia , which, however, was rejected by the Central Electoral Authority for formal reasons.

Academic positions

1977? Ivashov defended his candidate dissertation on the military-technical superiority of the Soviet Union in World War II. In 1998, as head of the main department for international military cooperation, he obtained a doctorate, which entitles him to teach as a professor in Russia, with a thesis on cooperation between Russia and China and Iran as a counterweight to NATO expansion. He is Professor of the Chair of International Journalism at the Moscow State Institute for International Relations (MGIMO for short) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. He also teaches at the Moscow State Linguistic University . 2004-2014 he was President of the Academy for Geopolitical Problems. After a one-year hiatus, he was re-elected to the post at the end of March 2015.

Memberships in associations

In 2002 he founded and headed the Russian State Military Federation. He is a member of the Supreme Officers' Council in Russia. In November 2006 he was elected chairman of the monarchist organization "Union of the Russian People". Since 2008 he has been a member of the Expert Council and one of the authors of the journal "Geopolitics".

He is also a member of the Izborsk Patriotic Club and a participant in the International Valdai Club .

He has published numerous books on security policy and appears in the media as a sought-after expert and contemporary witness.
