Valdai Club

The International Discussion Club "Valdai " ( Russian Международный дискуссионный клуб "Валдай" ) is an annual meeting of Russian and foreign journalists, politicians and scientists that takes place every autumn. The conference deals with the foreign and domestic politics of Russia , with a different topic each year. An integral part of the conference is a speech and a press conference by the Russian President.

history

The club was established in September 2004 on the initiative of the RIA Novosti press agency , the Council for Foreign and Defense Policy of Russia, the newspaper “The Moscow Times” and the magazines “Russia in World Politics” and “Russia Profile”.

2004

The first meeting of the club took place in September 2004 in Veliky Novgorod , not far from Lake Waldai . The theme of the meeting was: "Russia at the turn of the century - hopes and facts". The participants met with Vladimir Putin .

2005

The second meeting (2005) took place on the comfortable ship " Alexander Radishchev ", on the Moscow-Volga Canal from Moscow to Tver and back. The theme of the meeting was: "Russia - A Political Kaleidoscope".

2006

The third meeting (2006) was held in Moscow and in the center of the West Siberian oil field region of Khanty-Mansiysk . The theme was: "Worldwide energetics of the 21st century - role and place of Russia".

2007

The fourth meeting (2007) was held in the capital of Tatarstan , Kazan . Around 100 politicians and journalists from 12 countries were invited. Participants were: Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Borisovich Ivanov and Patriarch Alexius II , head of the Russian Orthodox Church . The participants met with Vladimir Putin in Sochi .

2008

The fifth meeting (2008) was held in Rostov-on-Don . The theme was: "The Role of Russia in the Global Geopolitical Revolution of the 21st Century". The meeting was attended by President Medvedev and Prime Minister Putin .

2009

The sixth meeting (2009) was held in the Far East of Yakutsk . The participants discussed "Russia and the West - Past and Future".

2010

The seventh meeting (2010) took place in Saint Petersburg . The participants visited Prime Minister Putin in his summer residence in Sochi .

2011

The eighth meeting took place in Kaluga and Moscow on the subject of "The elections of 2011 and 2012 and the future of Russia: Development scenarios for the next 5-8 years".

2012

The ninth meeting took place in Saint Petersburg under the theme: "The future is created today: Scenarios for Russia's economic development."

2013

The tenth meeting was held in Novgorod Oblast on the topic of "Russia's Diversity for the Contemporary World". In his speech, Putin accused the West of betraying the fundamental moral values ​​of Christian culture that formed the basis of its civilization.

Since 2014

Since 2014, the annual meetings have been held in Sochi in October .

In 2014 the topic was “World Order: New Rules or a Game without Rules?” Russian President Putin gave a speech that dealt primarily with questions of foreign policy and in which Putin made serious allegations against the USA.

The topics of the five half-day sessions in 2015 were “Security and the Problems of War”, “The State in the Modern World”, “Globalization and Regionalization”, “How the Global Environment is Changing”, “Global Alternatives” and "Eurasia".

In 2016 the following topics were dealt with under the motto “The future begins today: The outline of the world of tomorrow”: “Eurasia in the 21st century: A new role for Russia and new perspectives”, “Is the Middle East an arena of confrontation or joint action ? ”,“ The Problems of War and Military Security in the 21st Century ”,“ The Regionalization of the World and New Kinds of Interdependence ”,“ Russia and the EU in a Changing Europe ”.

In 2018 in Sochi the topic “Russia: Agenda for the 21st Century”, in which Russia, its perspectives, development and its position in the world should be in the foreground. Among other things, the preparation for a nuclear war was discussed. In contrast to previous years, President Vladimir Putin did not sit in a podium with other participants, but was interviewed for the most part alone, whereby it was clear from the screen displays that the entire interview followed a precise script. The Kommersant newspaper criticized the moderator for giving the president his earlier quotations as key words for self-evidence .
