Leonid Mitrofanowitsch Samjatin ( Russian Леонид Митрофанович Замятин ; born March 9, 1922 in Nizhnedevizk ; † June 19, 2019 ) was a Soviet ambassador and diplomat.

biography

He graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute and from 1946 worked as a diplomat. He became an advisor to the Soviet delegation to the United Nations and permanent representative of the Soviet Union on the Board of Governors of the IAEA. From 1962 to 1970 he worked in the Foreign Ministry of the Soviet Union and headed the press department. From 1970 to 1978 he was Director General of TASS , the official news agency of the Soviet Union. From 1978 to 1986 he was chairman of the international information department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

In 1986 Leonid Zamyatin was appointed Soviet ambassador to the United Kingdom. He was forced to resign after refusing to condemn the 1991 August coup against Mikhail Gorbachev .
