Leonora Milà i Romeu (born March 13, 1942 in Vilanova i la Geltrú ) is a Catalan composer and classical pianist who stands in the tradition of the Catalan Pianist School .

life and work

Leonora Milà was born into a musical family. Her father Josep Milà was a violinist in the Pau Casals Orchestra and the Gran Lliceu Orchestra of Barcelona. Leonora Milà herself was a student of Maria Canals at the Acadèmia Ars Nova . It was thus in the tradition of Ricard Viñes' piano school . Her early maturity was demonstrated by the fact that in 1949, at the age of seven, she performed a Mozart concerto and six of her own compositions at the Palau de la Música . At the age of 13 she gave a concert with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in the Royal Albert Hall with pieces by Enric Granados and Manuel de Falla, which was broadcast by the BBC. In 1966 she won the International Maria Canals Competition .

As a composer, Leonora Milà has written almost one hundred musical pieces. Her work includes pieces for piano solo, piano and voice, chamber music, symphonic music as well as opera and ballet. All of her compositions are characterized by a "brilliant language with great communicative power, alien to the avant-garde and guided by a solid melodic sense and a pulsating rhythmic force".

She has published over 30 recordings with works by Bach, Schumann, Debussy, Ravel, Falla, Albéniz, Granados and Turina and with her own compositions.

Milà is a member of the Association of Catalan Composers ( Associació Catalana de Compositors ). In 2005 she received the Catalan Culture Prize. In 2018 she received the Sant Jordi Cross for special achievements in the field of culture .
