The Leopold Order was founded on July 24, 1906 by Prince Leopold IV zur Lippe as an Order of Merit in initially two classes on a ribbon - with and without a crown.

Order classes

With amendments to the statutes on February 29, 1908, the following classification was made

  • Order of Leopold without crown (on ribbon)
  • Order of Leopold with crown (plug-in cross)
  • Cross for the Leopold Order
    • Silver medal
    • Bronze medal

On May 30, 1910, the statutes were changed again and the order was divided into three classes, two crosses and a medal and three levels

  • Chain to the Leopold Order
  • Großehrenkreuz (1st class) - plug-in cross
  • Order of the Leopold with a crown (II. Class) - plug-in cross
  • Leopold Order (III class) - on a ribbon
  • Cross for the Order of Leopold with the crown

Order decoration

The medal is an eight-pointed cross with small spheres on the tips. A large L (Leopold) in each of the cross corners . In the medallion on the front, on a white enameled background, the red enameled Lippe rose . On the reverse an L (Leopold) and above it the princely crown. Circumferential inscription FOR MERIT .

The ribbon is white with red side stripes.

With the abdication of Prince Leopold on November 11, 1918, the order was only awarded as a house order.
