Municipal housing by Schulz in Leopoldstadt

Leopold Schulz (born May 23, 1883 in Vienna ; † April 28, 1945 in Mauthausen concentration camp ) was an Austrian architect and builder. He designed two municipal buildings for the city of Vienna, which are now listed .

Life

Leopold Schulz was born the son of the Jewish commercial agent Samuel Schulz and his wife Marie, née Maibaum. He came from a humble background, with his father coming to Vienna from Bratislava . Schulz graduated from the Vienna State Trade School in 1903 and, after a few years of internship, worked as an architect and builder in Vienna from 1913. From 1925 to 1938 he held the title of city architect . Schulz was active as a master builder for the majority of his professional life; only two executed designs from his planning have survived. After the National Socialists came to power in 1938, Schulz was banned from working because of his Jewish religion. However, he refused to flee and went into hiding with his partner Lilly Hladisch in 1941 when the deportation of the Viennese Jews began. After their apartment was bombed out in October 1944, Schulz was betrayed to the Gestapo and after several months in Gestapo detention, he was taken to Mauthausen concentration camp in February 1945. There he died of the consequences of the mistreatment and of exhaustion shortly before the liberation of the concentration camp by the Allies. His partner, who was also sent to the concentration camp, survived the internment.

Leopold Schulz planned two community buildings for the city of Vienna, the residential complex at Taborstrasse 94 in Leopoldstadt and the residential complex at Brüßlgasse 45–47 in Ottakring . Both municipal buildings are under monument protection. Although the two residential complexes were built in quick succession, they show considerable differences. While the communal housing built in 1926 in Taborstrasse corresponds formally to Romantic Expressionism and shows a tendency towards monumentalization, the residential complex in Brüßlgasse, built between 1927 and 1928, was given a simple facade that only has small decorative details in the style of Biedermeier.
