Lepaute is an impact crater to the west of the lunar front , on the western edge of the Palus Epidemiarum plain , west of Ramsden crater . The crater is irregularly oval shaped and heavily eroded.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the French astronomer Nicole-Reine Lepaute .
