Leptocereus scopulophilus grows as a shrub with upright twigs that arise from a short unreinforced trunk and reaches heights of 2 to 3 meters. The upright, bright green main shoots mostly branch in their upper part and are 0.7 to 1.5 meters long. The uppermost ascending or spreading shoot segments reach a diameter of 3 to 4.8 centimeters. There are four to five flattened and somewhat wavy ribs . The areoles are located in the indentations of the ribs. The uneven brown thorns turn gray with age. The single 7 to 9 centimeter long central spine is followed by three to six spreading transition spines 2.8 to 5.5 centimeters long. The six to 13 radial spines, usually eight, are 1 to 2.5 inches long.

The cylindrical whitish pink to white flowers appear at the shoot tips and open at night. They are 4.5 to 5.5 inches long and 3 to 3.5 inches in diameter. Your pericarpel and the tube are brown thorns. The ellipsoidal to spherical fruits are thorny. They reach a length of up to 6.5 centimeters and a diameter of 5.5 centimeters.
