Reading ribbon (book)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yellow ribbon bookmark in a book

The reading ribbon (also reading ribbon , bookmark ribbon , memo ribbon ) is a narrow band of fabric attached to the head of the book block , which, placed between the book pages, serves as a bookmark . Usually it extends over the lower edge of the book block, in some books there are also several bands in different colors. The bookbinding technical term is character tape .

The reading ribbon is also referred to as a reading cord or drawing cord if it is a braided, non-woven ribbon. Nowadays, litz wires are used less often because they are more expensive than woven tapes.

The book ribbon should not be confused with the headband , the small, colored ribbon that is glued to the top and bottom of the spine of hardcover books and cover volumes.
