Bookworm

The term bookworm referred to in the vernacular people who like to read a lot; Synonyms are for example " bookworm " or "book fanatic". The term has been used since the late 19th century. It can have a slightly negative connotation, triggered by the word “ rat ”. One can associate it with the greed with which a bookworm devours a wide variety of literature.

In the 1920s, the term in student language was also used to describe lecturers who did not speak freely, but only read their lecture from a manuscript .
