Levenford House is a villa in the Scottish town of Dumbarton in the council area of West Dunbartonshire . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. In 1993 it was upgraded to the highest category A.

history

The building was built in 1853 for James Denny , a partner in the Dumbarton shipyard William Denny & Brothers . As the architect, John Thomas Rochead was entrusted with the planning. In 1881 Levenford House became the property of Walter Brock and remained in the family until 1938. The villa was offered to the city of Dumbarton to set up a library or a museum. The district library administration was housed there until 2006, when the building was sold to a private individual. 1978 parts of the Scottish television series The Marcia Blane School for Girls were filmed there. Since 2011 the villa has been listed on the register of endangered listed buildings in Scotland. However, his condition is classified as good with low risk. It was last described as vacant in 2011.

Levenford House is located in the Dalreoch district of Dumbarton, west of the Leven . Rochead planned the asymmetrical villa in the style of the Scottish Baronial . The masonry of the two-story building consists of roughly hewn quarry stone . All building openings are set off. In the southeast, a three-storey tower with indicated crenellated reinforcement and a cantilevered guard tower rises up, which gives the impression of a tower house . The roofs are covered with slate shingles and the gable of the saddle roofs is worked as a stepped gable .
