The Levi Strauss Museum in Buttenheim was opened in 2000 in the house where Levi Strauss , the inventor of jeans , was born.

In autumn 1987, the Buttenheim municipal council decided to acquire the listed building at Marktstrasse 33, which is one of the oldest buildings in Buttenheim. Renovation of the dilapidated building began in 1992 and the museum opened in autumn 2000.

In 2011 the extension of the outbuilding in Marktstr. 31 completed. The museum now has special exhibition and event rooms, a cafeteria and a museum shop.

Denim fabric weave pattern

The life of Levi Strauss and the history of jeans are presented in the museum. The first floor is dedicated to the manufacture and dyeing of denim as well as the success story of these trousers, which continues to this day . The permanent exhibition also shows the emigration documents of the Strauss family and the announcement of the emigration in the official gazette (1853). The life and work of the Frankish country Jews in the 19th century, many of whom emigrated to the USA , is also shown.

building

The originally single - storey half-timbered house was built around 1687. The gable roof building was increased in 1733. Levi Strauss lived with his parents and six siblings on the ground floor.
