Lewis Thornton Powell (also known as Lewis Paine or Payne * 22. April 1844 in Randolph County , Alabama , † 7. July 1865 in Washington, DC ) was an American co-conspirators of Lincoln - assassin John Wilkes Booth .

On the evening of April 14, 1865, when Booth shot Lincoln in the Ford Theater in Washington, Powell broke into Secretary of State William H. Seward's house and severely wounded him with several knife stabs. On April 17th, Powell was arrested and identified by Seward's butler .

On July 7, 1865, Powell was hanged along with three other conspirators Mary Surratt , David Herold and George Atzerodt .
