geography
location
The approx. 570 km² Comarca Liébana borders the provinces of Asturias , Léon and Palencia . Liébana includes the municipalities of Cabezón de Liébana , Camaleño , Cilliorigo de Liébana , Pesaguero , Potes , Tresviso and Vega de Liébana , which in turn consist of a large number of villages - the municipality of Camaleño alone has over 30 villages and hamlets; on the other hand, the municipality of Tresviso consists of only one village with about 70 inhabitants.
Liébana is a mountain region characterized by four valleys ( Valdebaró , Cereceda , Piedrasluengas and Cillorigo ) that come together in the center at Potes. The main rivers are the Río Deva , the Río Quiviesa and the Río Bullón . The steep slopes consist of coal-bearing limestone ; Slate and sandstone are found in the valleys.
climate
In contrast to the other regions of Cantabria, where the climate is more atlantic, there is a Mediterranean microclimate in the narrowness of the valleys . The maximum average temperatures are 28 ° C, the minimum 8 ° C. The average amount of rain is also lower than in the rest of Cantabria (800 mm per year as opposed to 1,000 to 1,200 mm). The region has produced an astonishing variety of flora on its high, steep slopes and in the deep valleys - the many oak species should be mentioned here, such as the holm oak , the cork oak and the pedunculate oak .

economy
The economy in Liébana has developed from the primary sector to an emerging region of rural tourism ( turismo rural ) over the past few decades . The Picos de Europa National Park and the almost untouched nature are the main attractions. This positive development can be seen primarily in Potes, the capital of Liébana. Here the population is increasing and emigration and aging have stopped for the time being, which is not the case in the other places. 'Liébana' is also the name of a local wine ( vino de la tierra ) produced in the region .
history

The monk, theologian and geographer Beatus von Liébana (730–800) lived in the monastery of San Martin de Turieno . He achieved fame through his main work, written around 776, with the commentaries on the biblical apocalypse in twelve books ( Beatus (illumination) ). One of the earliest Christian world maps, the mappa mundi , is shown in the introduction.
Attractions
The region is ideal for hiking. The medieval monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana and the pre-Romanesque- Mozarabic church of Santa María de Lebeña are historically and culturally significant . The center of Potes is classified as a conjunto histórico-artístico .
