Life

Gladys Li, as she was called as a child, was the sixth of nine children. Her parents were among the first Chinese doctors to practice Western medicine in Hawaii. After the occupation of Manchuria by the Japanese Empire , Li Ling-Ai actively campaigned for the US to support China. She tried to counter the relatively widespread discrimination against the Chinese , especially on the west coast of the USA (see Chinese Exclusion Act ).

The documentary Kukan, produced by Li Ling-Ai together with Rey Scott , about China's resistance struggle against the Japanese occupation during World War II , was awarded an honorary Oscar in Hollywood in 1942.
