Liam Aylward ( Irish Liam Aighleart , born September 27, 1952 in Kilkenny , County Kilkenny ) is an Irish politician.

Liam Aylward was born in 1952 to the Irish politician Bob Aylward . He received his diploma in building and construction in 1972 and then worked as a laboratory technician. From 1974 to 2002 he was a member of Kilkenny County Council . In 1977 he was first elected for the Fianna Fáil in the Irish House of Commons, the Dáil Éireann . During his time as a Member of Parliament ( Teachta Dála ), Aylward held various posts as Minister of State . Among other things, he was Minister of State at the Department of Energy from November 25, 1988 to February 11, 1992 , and then from February 13, 1992 to June 15, 1994 Minister of State in the Ministry of Education ( Minister of State at the Department of Education ) and finally, from June 18, 2002 to June 15, 2004 Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food .

When Aylward was elected to the European Parliament in June 2004 , he resigned from his post as Minister of State, but remained a Member of Parliament until the end of the legislature. In the elections in May 2007 for the 30th Dáil Éireann, he no longer stood. Instead, his brother and fellow party member Bobby Aylward ran . As a member of the European Parliament , Aylward was a member of the Union for a Europe of Nations group. Since 2009 he has been part of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe . Aylward is a member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development , the Delegation for relations with the Mercosur countries and the Delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly.

Aylward was chairman of the South-Eastern Health Board from 1987 to 1988 , and chairman of the Vocational Education Authority from 1997 to 2002 .

He is married and has four children, two sons and two daughters.
