Libby Lane , actually Elizabeth Jane Holden Lane (born December 8, 1966 in Glossop ) is a British Anglican clergyman and suffragan Bishop of Stockport in the Diocese of Chester of the Church of England . She is the first female bishop in the Church of England. In December 2018 she was appointed the future Bishop of Derby.

Life

Lane was ordained a deaconess in 1993 and an Anglican priestess in 1994 with her husband George. Lane was previously the Vicaress of St Peter's Hale and St Elizabeth's Ashley. She went to Manchester to school and studied at St Peter's College of the University of Oxford . The couple has two grown children.

On December 17, 2014, the Prime Minister's Office announced the appointment. Her episcopal ordination took place on January 26, 2015 by John Sentamu in the cathedral of the ecclesiastical province of York , York Minster .

There are currently 26 Anglican bishops in the House of Lords ; Lane will not get a seat as she is a suffragan bishop.

The British Queen confirmed the election of Libby Lane as Bishop of Derby on December 18, 2018. Libby Lane succeeds Alastair Redfern , who will retire on August 31, 2019.
