Alastair Llewellyn John Redfern (born September 1, 1948 ) is a British Anglican theologian . He has been Bishop of Derby in the Church of England since 2005 .

Life

Redfern visited Bicester School in Bicester , Oxfordshire , the Christ Church College of Oxford University and the London Law School . Redfern initially studied law with the professional goal of solicitor , but later changed the subject. He then studied theology at Westcott House College , Cambridge and Queen's College , Birmingham . He graduated with a Master of Arts ( MA ) and a doctorate as a PhD in the subject Philosophy from.

In 1976 he was ordained a deacon . In 1977 he was ordained a priest . From 1976 to 1979 he was Vicar ( Assistant Curate ) in the district of Tettenhall Regis in Wolverhampton in the Diocese of Lichfield . From 1979 to 1987 he was lecturer and lecturer in church history at Ripon College in Cuddesdon , near Oxford . He later became Vice Principal there . During this time he was also vicar at the All Saints Church in Cuddesdon from 1983 to 1987 . From 1987 to 1997 he was the Residentiary Canon at Bristol Cathedral in Bristol . He also taught church history at Bristol University . From 1991 to 1997 he was the local diocesan director responsible for the formation of priests in the diocese. From 1997 he was suffragan bishop of Grantham , from 1998 to 2005 at the same time dean of Stamford . From 2000 he was canon and prebendary at Lincoln Cathedral . In 2005 he was named Bishop of Derby to succeed Jonathan Sansbury Bailey . On November 12, 2005, he was inaugurated with a solemn service in the Cathedral of Derby ( Cathedral of All Saints ).

Redfern is considered a recognized theologian and church historian . He has written several books , scientific articles , magazines and radio reports on various topics of the Christian faith. His publications include Ministry and Priesthood (1999), Being Anglican (2000) and Growing the Kingdom (2009).

The focus of his pastoral church work lay in caring for the homeless and in his voluntary work for Oxfam and Christian Aid . Redfern also campaigned for the urban regeneration of numerous Lincolnshire communities and contributed to local radio stations .

On the occasion of the 2009 European and British regional elections, Redfern was among the signatories of a declaration along with George Henry Cassidy , Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham , Anthony Porter , Bishop of Sherwood, and Humphrey Ivo John Southern , Bishop of Repton, in 2009 the British National Party's electoral targets as " incompatible with Christian doctrine and the example of Jesus Christ ".

Membership in the House of Lords

Redfern has been a member of the House of Lords as Spiritual Lord since 2010 . He succeeded Anthony Russell , Bishop of Ely , in the House of Lords .

Private

Redfern is married to Caroline Redfern for the second time. His first wife, Jane, died in 2004. He is the father of two daughters from his first marriage.
