Liberal Regeneration Party
The Liberal Regeneration Party (in Portuguese : Partido Regenerador Liberal ) was a political party in Portugal from the time of the constitutional monarchy . It was founded in 1901 as a split from the Regeneration Party . Its most important politician was João Franco . Since this completely dominated the party, it is also known as the " Frankist Party ".
The beginning of the 20th century was an extremely eventful time in Portuguese domestic politics. Republican currents are growing stronger and threaten the already agonized monarchy and the political system that had developed in Portugal since the end of the Miguelist War . The conservative Regeneration Party was at this point under the dominant influence of its chairman Ernesto Rodolfo Hintze Ribeiro . The inner-party opponents of his policy of harshness against the Republicans rallied around João Franco. They even went so far as to support the Republicans against the Regeneration Party. In 1901 there was a formal break between Franco and the rest of the party, he left the Regeneration Party with 25 members to found the Liberal Regeneration Party.
With João Franco, the party formed the government from 1906 to 1908. After an initially liberal policy towards the Republicans, the Franco government is becoming more and more radical, the latter begins to govern in an authoritarian manner without parliament and to enact a series of repressive measures against the Republicans. When King Charles I fell victim to an attack in 1908 , the government of the Liberal Regeneration Party ended when the new king, Manuel II , dismissed João Franco.
