Under the name Liceo de Varones (German: College for Young Men ), a school team from the Mexican city of Guadalajara competed in Jalisco during the pioneering years of football . It was founded between 1906 and 1908 and existed until the school closed in 1914. Between 1908 and 1914, it was part of the Liga Amateur de Jalisco , which was introduced in 1908 and existed until the introduction of professional football in 1943.

history

school

The Liceo de Varones was one of the largest educational institutions in Jalisco in its day. The building in which the school was located was built at the beginning of the 18th century and initially housed the San José seminary . In 1861 the newly established Liceo de Varones de Guadalajara was housed here. After its closure in 1914, the Museo de Bellas Artes , the museum of fine arts , was established here in 1918 .

In the school, gymnastics , fencing , horse riding and jumping were practiced at first. Some time later, the English influence added football, which was played with growing enthusiasm in the schoolyard.

Soccer team

The Liceo de Varones were the first serious opponents of the Guadalajara Football Club and their duels were fought with relentless severity.

Both teams were three times champions in the first six seasons of the Liga Amateur de Jalisco. Liceo won the championship in 1911, 1913 and 1914 before Guadalajara FC. In addition, the school team was twice runner-up in 1910 and 1912, each behind Club Guadalajara.

The derbies between the two teams were so intense that there were sometimes even violent clashes after the games. Gregorio Orozco , who was President of Club Guadalajara at the time, even reported that after a derby, Liceo players appeared in front of his house and pelted it with stones.

When the school closed in 1914, the team was disbanded. The first rivalry in Guadalajara had come to an abrupt end and was soon replaced by the rivalry between Club Guadalajara and Club Atlas , founded in 1916 .
