Liceu Nacional

The Liceu Nacional (formerly: Escola Técnica Silva e Cunha ) is a lyceum (secondary school) in São Tomé , the capital of the island state of São Tomé and Príncipe . It is one of the oldest secondary schools in the country. Currently (2015) around 6,000 students are enrolled. The Liceu building is on the seafront, east of the city center on Avenida Marginal 12 Julho .

The Lyceum was founded on October 6, 1969 as the Technical University, Escola Técnica Silva e Cunha . The building was designed by architect Mário de Oliveira , who also designed the overall plan for São Tomé's urbanization in 1962. After Sao Tomé became independent, the school became a liceu . For more than 36 years, until 2011, it was the only university in the country.
