The term lichenification ( Lichen = Greek for " lichen ") describes a large-area thickening of the skin with enlarged fields, which is counted among the secondary efflorescences . It occurs regularly as a symptom of various chronic skin diseases .

Frequent causes of lichenification are long-term mechanical, chemical or inflammatory irritation of the skin, including in the context of chronic eczema . It is typical for neurodermatitis, among other things . In dogs , lichenification can also be caused by hypothyroidism or a Sertoli cell tumor ( tumor of the Sertoli cells of the testicle ).
