The song festival ( Dainų šventė ) is a music event in Lithuania and is one of the three Baltic song festivals . It has been organized 17 times since 1924.

history

The song festival for the millennium of Lithuania (2009) consisted of the following program: an evening of professional performances (castle territory, cathedral square ), a choral music evening (congress concert hall), a zither afternoon (Church of the Resurrection of Christ, Kaunas), modernized folklore ( Kalnų Park ) , a folklore day ( Sereikiškių Park ), brass bands (Kalnų Park, Town Hall Square ), an ensemble evening ( Valley of Songs , Kaunas), a dance day ( Žalgiris Stadium ), a program of the Day of Schoolchildren and Great Songs ( Vingio Park ).

There was also a parade of participants, a folk art exhibition, concerts by artistic collectives, the combined performance of amateur theaters entitled "America in the Sauna" and many other events. Around 40,000 performers from Lithuania and emigrants from all over the world took part in the various programs.

In 2003 the song festival was recognized by UNESCO as a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of mankind , together with the other Baltic song festivals ( Estonia and Latvia ) , and in 2008 it was included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
