The Lilienthal Medal is the highest international award for performance in gliding . It has been published by the international air sports organization Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) since 1938 in honor of the aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal . It recognizes an outstanding achievement in the field of motorless flight . The winners are determined by the FAI's annual general conference.

The first prize winner was the Pole Tadeusz Góra for his record flight of 577.8 kilometers on May 18, 1938 from Bezmiechowa to Soleczniki (near Vilnius ).
