Lilja (Drápa)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lilja ( Old Norse : lily) is a Drápa , an Old Norse poetry by Eysteinn Ásgrímsson , which is considered the most important religious poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages.

The introduction describes the time of the Old Testament . The main part describes salvation , the conclusion deals with Jesus Christ and Mary and greets the reader.

The likely author of the poem, the Icelandic Augustinian monk Eysteinn Ásgrímsson, died in 1361. Contemporary writings claim with regard to the poem that “all the Skáld would have wished they had written Lilja ”. In this work, which was written in the middle of the 14th century, the author expressed his faith with fervent enthusiasm in a sometimes well-spoken style, which opposed the Dróttkvætt artificial poetic language common at the time . The work showed a transition from Dróttkvætt to Hrynhent and directed Icelandic poetry to the late Middle Ages, so that Dróttkvætt never regained the upper hand. The largely anonymous poetry from the late 14th and 15th centuries, which has been little studied, was thematically and metrically based on the example of the Latin hymn instead of the Dróttkvætt.
