Limaria loscombi (syn .: LIMEA loscombi ) is a shell - type from the family of limidae (Limidae).

features

The equally-hinged, but unequal-sided case is obliquely egg-shaped and significantly longer than it is wide. It is elongated at the front lower end. The rear edge is slightly curved, the front edge almost straight. The ventral margin is deeply arched. The two flaps are strongly arched (inflated) and do not gap when the housing is closed. Fritz Nordsieck gives the following dimensions: 20 mm long, 12 mm wide and 12 mm thick (in cross section). The dorsal margin is straight, but the ears are very small and about the same size. They merge with the front or rear edge at an obtuse angle. The front ears are slightly protruding and have a shallow byssus bay . They are smooth without ribs. The vertebrae are widely separated, with a broad dorsal field. The ligament rests on a large, triangular resilifer . The lock plate on both sides of the Resilifer is smooth, ie there are no teeth. The muscle marks and the coat attachment are indistinct. The edge of the mantle is covered with orange-red tentacles.

The gray-white to off-white skin is thin, translucent and fragile. The ornamentation consists of about 50 radial ribs and stripes. Of these, the central 20 or so ribs are more pronounced and create a serration on the lower edge of the housing. One to three secondary ribs intervene between the primary ribs. They intersect with fine growth strips parallel to the edge. The periostracum is thin and decrepit.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area of Limaria loscombi extends from northern Norway to Angola . It has also been found in Newfoundland (fide Nordsieck), the Azores and the Mediterranean .

Limaria loscombi lives on fine sandy to muddy-sandy soils from about 25 m to about 100 m water depth (shallowest record: 9 m, deepest record: 2,704 meters water depth). Allegedly Limaria loscombi does not build byssus nests.

Taxonomy

George Brettingham Sowerby I established the taxon in 1823 as Lima loscombi . It is the type species of the genus Limatulella Sacco, 1898. The latter is used by some authors as a sub-genus of Limaria or Limea (Nordsieck). MolluscaBase also gives the following synonyms : Lima bullata Turton, 1822, Lima clausa Danilo & Sandri, 1856, Lima goodallii Brown, 1844 and Lima reticulata Leach in Gray, 1852.
