Limdep is a commercial, Windows-based econometrics software from the US company Econometric Software, Inc. The first version of the software was developed in 1980.

Scope of services and scope

Limdep's main application area is the evaluation of regression models for discrete dependent variables or target values ( logistic regression ).

A regression in the statistical sense is the quantification of a cause-effect relationship. A distinction is made between dependent and explanatory variables. The dependent variables correspond to the effect. The explanatory or independent variables correspond to the cause. In logistic regression in particular, a variable that is on the scale level of the nominal scale is explained by the regression model. A nominally scaled variable has distinctive characteristics that cannot be ranked: e.g. B. the variable “gender” with the characteristics “male” and “female” or the variable “loan payment behavior” with the characteristics “it is paid” and “it is not paid”. The aim of a regression analysis is to develop a model on the basis of known values for cause and effect variables with which unknown data can be estimated. The aim would be to be able to estimate whether a borrower is more creditworthy or not before a loan is granted.

The unique selling point of the software is the processable model complexity, which is essentially only limited by practical model considerations, working memory and computing time. In addition to logistic regression, another application area of the software is time series analysis . There is an expansion module called Nlogit for the Limdep software .

Limdep is widely used in research, study and administration. It is used for panel data analysis and in econometrics. There are logit - Probit -, Tobit models and " discrete-choice " models calculable.

Alternatives

Alternatives to Limdep are the commercial products Stata , SAS , RATS or WinRATS and EViews . Alternative free software includes GNU R and gretl especially for time series analysis.
