The Limhamn Griffins are a Swedish American football club based in Limhamn . The Griffins were founded in 1988 through the merger of the Glue Harbor Buccaners and the Limhamn Lumberjacks. The name Griffins and the team logo, the head of a griffin in purple, is derived from the city coat of arms of Malmö , which also includes a griffin.

history

From the start, the Griffins belonged to the first Swedish league super series . The team had their best time in the first half of the nineties when they reached the league finals in 1990, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996 and won them in 1993 and 1994. This was followed by a slump in sport and after the 1998 season they had to relegate to Division I. Only in 2001 did they get promoted again and in the 2002 season the Griffins even reached the quarter-finals for the championship, but already in the following season they had to withdraw from the league for various reasons. The new beginning with young players began in the 2004 season in Division I and 2005 succeeded again in the promotion to the first division, where the Griffins 2007 even won their third championship title. In the all-time table of super series, the Griffins are third behind the Stockholm Mean Machines and the Carlstad Crusaders . For the 2009 season, the Griffins have announced their team will withdraw from the Super Series and start a new start in Division II.

At the EFL , the Griffins took part twice (1994 and 1995), but failed each in the quarter-finals at the Finnish representative Helsinki East City Giants .

Teams

In addition to the men's team, there are several youth teams in play, currently in the PeeWee, U13, U15, U17 classes. The Griffins U19 team won the Swedish runner-up in 1994, 1995 and 1999.
