Lina Basquette , actually Lena Copeland Baskette (born April 19, 1907 in San Mateo , California , † September 20, 1994 in Wheeling , West Virginia ), was an American actress .

Life

Lina Basquette was the only child of Gladys Lee Baskette and Frank Baskette. After her father's suicide, her mother married the choreographer Ernest Belcher. Her younger half-sister was the dancer Marjorie Celeste Champion, b. Belcher . She made her first film in 1916 at the age of nine. By 1917 she appeared in 16 films. In 1925 she married the Hollywood producer Sam Warner of Warner Bros. She became a mother at 19 in 1926, and widowed at 20 when Sam Warner died the day before the premiere of his film The Jazz Singer in 1927 . After the early death of her husband, there was an argument with the Warner brothers. She received $ 40,000 from life insurance , a car, and a weekly pension of $ 85, but had to hand over custody of her daughter Lita to the brothers and didn't see her daughter again until 30 years later. In 1928 she was voted one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars of the Year and received the title role in Cecil B. DeMille's last silent film The Godless Girl . In 1929 she played the lead role alongside Jean Hersholt in Frank Capra's film Junge Generation , some of which was already produced as a sound film . With the sound film she received only a few roles and spent most of her time traveling. Also in 1929 she married the cameraman J. Peverell Marley , the marriage lasted until 1930. In 1931 she married the actor Ray Hallam, who died three weeks later of leukemia . In the same year she married the boxing trainer Theodore Hayes, who, however, was already married to another woman, and as a result this marriage was invalid. In 1933 they married a second time. The marriage produced a son and divorced in 1935. In 1937 she married the actor Henry Mollison. From 1947 to 1951 she was married to Warner Gilmore, with whom she has a daughter. She married her seventh husband Frank Mancuso in 1959. The couple separated that same year, but the marriage never ended in divorce.

In addition to her seven marriages, Basquette also had affairs with celebrities such as Jack Dempsey and Nelson Eddy . In 1943 she made her last film until 1991. In the same year, she made headlines for her rape allegations against a young US soldier. The young man received a prison sentence of 20 years. Lina Basquette then withdrew into private life. In the 1950s, she began breeding Great Danes professionally . She received numerous awards for her dogs and was a recognized referee in dog competitions. She sold the dogs all over the world, and Hollywood stars like Raymond Burr were among her customers.

In 1991 she stepped in front of a film camera for the last time. She played an elderly lady in Daniel Boyd's film Paradise Park .

In her honor there is a star on the Walk of Fame .
