Linda is a song from the soundtrack of the war drama Battle Storm on Monte Cassino ( The Story of GI Joe ) from 1945, directed by William A. Wellman, with Robert Mitchum and Burgess Meredith in leading roles. The song was composed and written by Ann Ronell . The song is sung in the film by Pat Friday . Shelley Mitchell lends her speaking voice to Sally. The soldiers lie in their makeshift accommodation and listen pensively to the singing, which is underlined by a lush string arrangement. The love ballad tells of Sally and her love for a soldier with whom she often met in a small café. It is empty there now and the question arises whether Sally will wait for him or forget him.

During the same period, Jack Lawrence also released a song called Linda , which was sung by Buddy Clark and accompanied by Ray Noble and his orchestra. He wrote the song for the then five-year-old daughter Linda of his lawyer Lee Eastman, who later became Beatle Paul McCartney's wife . Ronell's lawsuit for the title's copyright was denied because the title of a song was not copyrighted, only the music and lyrics of the song. Another song called Linda wrote Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler , the u. a. Benny Goodman recorded in 1930.
