Louis Applebaum

Louis Applebaum , CC , (born April 3, 1918 in Toronto , † April 19, 2000 there ) was a Canadian composer .

Life

Louis Applebaum was born in Toronto to Morris (* 1895) and Fanny (* 1899) Applebaum. His parents were Polish Jews who had emigrated to Canada a few years earlier . Applebaum studied piano at the University of Toronto from 1928 . In 1940 he went to New York to study composition . Between 1942 and 1960 he composed around 250 different film scores. In 1946, the film music he composed for the war drama Battle Storm on Monte Cassino was nominated for an Oscar . In 1955 he founded the Stratford Music Festival as part of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival .

Applebaum was named Officer of the Order of Canada in 1976 and Companion of the Order of Canada in 1995.
