“Biology lessons must not only convey knowledge that can be queried. It must educate, that is, lead the pupil to an understanding of living nature and the laws governing it, explain its significance for human existence and convey secure foundations based on the laws of life for the intellectual debate of our time. The lessons should not lead to much knowledge, but to knowledge based on insights. The working lesson is intended to lead the pupils to knowledge based on the natural object and supplements this path with observations and experiments on living objects in the classroom and outdoors. The student who has learned to independently examine or observe and describe a natural object, who knows how to extract the essence of the phenomena by comparing them, has acquired skills that will also be of some importance to him in later life become. His senses have been sharpened and critical thinking has been trained. In addition to “knowledge”, “ability” is added on an equal footing. Above all, education for self-activity is the prerequisite for a scientifically in-depth teaching work that we must strive for in our higher schools. "( On the treatment of teaching in human studies (Der Biologe), 1932)
