The Lindholm Høje burial ground near Aalborg in Jutland and its neighboring settlement from the late Nordic Iron Age and the Viking Age is Denmark 's largest burial ground with 682 graves .

Most of the dead were cremated along with their grave goods and buried in a grave, which is often marked by a stone setting . The grave field was buried by sand drift and is therefore well preserved.

The oldest stone settings are triangular with concave sides and a building stone in the middle. They correspond roughly to the small Treuddar that is common in Norway and Sweden . Round and oval stone settings come from a somewhat later period, and the ship-shaped stone settings from the Viking Age with the stems clearly marked by larger stones. These date from the time between 800 and 1,000 AD, i.e. also the time of the kings Gorm , Harald Blauzahn and Sven Gabelbart , but they do not show any influences from Christianity.

To the north of the burial ground, the associated settlement was examined. Wooden footbridges, fountains, and the post holes of houses are numerous. At the places where the pit houses were located, spindle whorls and weaving weights were found that could indicate the use of the pit houses as weaving chambers. Part of the post holes on the southeast side of the grave field was filled with cement and shows the size of the houses.

During the excavation in the years 1952–1956, a freshly plowed field was discovered which, based on a coin find, can be dated to around 1050 AD. Shortly after plowing, a storm with sand drift set in and the field was completely covered. Little by little all the land was covered with drift sand and around 1100 AD the settlement was finally abandoned.
