Lindores Abbey was an abbey in the Scottish council area of Fife , of which ruins are evidence today.

history

The monastery was founded around 1190 by David of Scotland, Earl of Huntingdon as an offshoot of Kelso Abbey .

In the records of the Royal Scottish Tax Authority it is reported that Brother John Cor, a Benedictine monk of the abbey , bought a large amount of barley malt in 1494 or 1495 "ad faciendum aquavite" - in English: "to make water of life out of it". This note is considered to be the earliest recorded mention of Scottish whiskey .

James Douglas, 9th Earl of Douglas, was imprisoned at the abbey for about seven years until his death in 1491.

In 1559 the monastery was attacked, plundered and declared dissolved in the course of the Reformation turmoil; Only the entrance portal and parts of the cloister , chapter house , sacristy and church have been preserved .

The ruins of Lindores Abbey came into the possession of Ian Howison in 1913; His great-grandson, Drew McKenzie Smith, began building a whiskey distillery in 2016 on the site of the monastery courtyard, which had almost disappeared without a trace. It has been distilled there since 2017; In the same year the newly built visitor center opened.
