Lionel Nathan de Rothschild (born January 25, 1882 in London , † January 28, 1942 ibid.) Was a British banker and politician ( Conservative Party ).

Life and activity

Rothschild was the eldest son of Leopold de Rothschild (1845–1917) and his wife Marie, b. Perugia (1862-1937). He was at the Harrow School and Trinity College of Oxford University trained, where he earned a bachelor in 1903 and 1908 a master's degree.

In the British general election of 1910, Rothschild was elected as a candidate for the Conservative Party in the constituency of Aylesburgy in the House of Commons , the British Parliament, of which he was a member until 1923.

Unlike his two younger brothers, Rothschild did not take an active part due to his obligations to his family's banking house (NM Rothschild & Sons). Instead, he worked as a major in the Royal Buckinghamshire Yeomanry in the training of war volunteers.

Following the death of his father in 1917, Rothschild and his brother Anthony became members of the board of directors of the Rothschild banking house (NM. Rothschild & Sons).

In addition to his work as a banker and member of parliament, Rothschild also made a name for himself as a horticulturalist and promoter of horticulture. From 1919 he created Exbury Gardens in Hampshire , which is considered one of the most important gardens in England and has a population of more than a million plants. He also bred more than 1,204 new rhododendron and azalea hybrids there. In the 1920s he also built the Exbury House.

At the end of the 1930s, because of his position in British business life, Rothschild was targeted by the police forces of Nazi Germany, who classified him as an important target. In the spring of 1940, the Reich Main Security Office in Berlin put him on the special wanted list GB , a list of people whom the Nazi surveillance apparatus considered particularly dangerous or important, which is why they should be removed from the occupation troops in the event of a successful invasion and occupation of the British Isles by the Wehrmacht Subsequent SS special commands should be located and arrested with special priority.

Rothschild was buried in the Willesden Jewish Cemetery.
