List of attacks on Saddam Hussein

Saddam Hussein

The list of assassinations on Saddam Hussein includes assassinations and coup attempts on Saddam Hussein , who was Iraqi Prime Minister from 1979 to 1991 and from 1994 to 2003 and ruled the country under a dictatorial regime.

background

At least 16 assassinations have been carried out on Saddam Hussein since 1973. Again and again, even from his innermost circle, assassinations or coup attempts were reported. For fear of attacks, Saddam Hussein developed a system of doppelgangers for himself and his family and, for fear of them, used his palaces hardly or at all irregularly. Various sources report that he rarely slept in one place for more than one night and surprisingly changed his whereabouts at night. His ways and appointments shouldn't have followed a pattern. People, objects or food that came close to him should have been checked for hazards (weapons, poisons, explosives, etc.).

list

The list of attacks on Saddam Hussein cannot claim to be complete, as only the attacks that have become public can be mentioned.

date description
June 30, 1973 The Shiite security chief General Nadhim Kazar attempts a coup against Ahmad Hasan al-Bakr and Saddam Hussein. The conspiracy is exposed, Kazar and his followers are killed. After this coup attempt, the Iraqi secret service is reformed with the help of the KGB .
July 8, 1982 The Islamic Dawa Party is preparing an attack during a visit to the city of Dujail . Saddam Hussein's motorcade is attacked with machine guns and RPG-7s . Ten of his bodyguards die, his car is hit, but he is unharmed. Subsequently, over 600 villagers were arrested and 148 prisoners were presumably executed. The massacre was the first of twelve charges against Hussein in the 2005-2006 trial.
1983 Barzan Ibrahim at-Tikriti publishes the book "Assassination Attempts on the Life of President Saddam Hussein" and lists seven (excluding Dujail ) failed attacks on Saddam Hussein.

The attempted coup, started in July 1996, fails because Saddam Hussein's secret service had previously succeeded in infiltrating the INA.
1997 A coup attempt by party member Ahmad Taha, who saved Saddam Hussein's life in 1959, fails. Taha, participating party members and generals are executed.
September 30, 2002 An Iraqi air force pilot tries to bomb the presidential palace where Saddam Hussein is staying with a MiG-23 . The aircraft is shot down by a Republican Guard anti- aircraft missile . The base officers were subjected to lengthy interrogations, and the pilot was burned in front of the base's staff.
