The "Royal Bad Oeynhausen" received city rights in 1860. The mayors of the city of Bad Oeynhausen initially worked as head of the city and administration in the main office. With the North German Council Constitution from March 1, 1946, the mayors were honorary chairmen of the council, while the management of the city administration was transferred to the city directors elected by the council. According to the applicable municipal code for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia , there has been a full-time mayor again since 1999, who is directly elected by the population.
