The honorary citizenship is the highest municipal award the city running . They are awarded by resolution of the city council.

Since 1897 the following people have been made honorary citizens. The honorary citizenships granted to Adolf Hitler, Franz Ritter von Epp, Adolf Wagner and Kreisleiter Kammerer during the period of National Socialism under the pressure of District Commissioner Koppheister's threat of immediate dissolution of the City Council were revoked on June 11, 1945.

After 1967 no more honorary citizenship was granted. Deserving citizens are honored with the Laufen Citizen Medal.

    Hornberger worked as a pastor in the Laufen prison. He was made an honorary citizen for the services he earned in this difficult task.
  5. Franz Fuchs (born September 11, 1876 - † February 20, 1961)
    Pharmacy owner
    Awarded on December 19, 1949
    Fuchs served as the city's 1st mayor for many years and was appointed former mayor when he left office. He was granted honorary citizenship for his faithful, selfless and unselfish service to the city.
  6. Hans Düll (born October 20, 1879 - † February 26, 1963)

    Awarded in 1950
    Düll was the city's second mayor. He earned special services in the construction of the new cemetery and the expansion of the water supply.
  7. Friedrich Nickolai (born August 19, 1890 - † September 20, 1962)

    Awarded on August 18, 1960
    Nickolai was mayor of the city after World War II. He was made an honorary citizen because of his services to the development of the city and his achievements in this office.
  8. Peter Gries (April 3, 1894 - April 13, 1977)
    Abbey dean, clergyman, city pastor
    Awarded in 1965
    The award of honorary citizenship honored his pastoral work for the population in times of war and peace and especially during the flood disasters in 1954 and 1959, as well as his special services to the renovation of the collegiate church.
  9. Sebastian Knoller (born February 19, 1895)

    Awarded on January 10, 1965
    On the occasion of his 70th birthday, Knoller was honored for his services to the good of the city.
  10. Max Schmid (* 1905)
