The capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is on an equal footing with the provinces and is divided into 24 municipalities ( communes ).

Statistical data

Kinshasa (lingala: Kinsásá ) is indeed the capital, but is administratively equal to the provinces and is administered by a governor. It is divided into communes , each headed by a mayor appointed by decree by the President. The largest municipality by area is Maluku with 7,948.80 square kilometers (79.8 percent of the total area). The smallest community is Kintambo with 2.72 square kilometers (0.03 percent). Kimbanseke has the highest population with 946,372 (share of the total population 13.5 percent). The lowest population has the "government district" Gombe (also La Gombe ) with 32,373 inhabitants (0.5 percent). The municipality with the highest population density is Bumbu with 62,120 inhabitants per square kilometer. Maluku has the lowest density with 23 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The population figures in the table below are an estimate by the Statistical Office of the Democratic Republic of the Congo ( Institut National de la Statistique ) from 2004.
