The Malebo pool (formerly Stanleypool , after Henry Morton Stanley , also Malebopool , Ngobilasee ) is an extension of the lower Congo in the manner of a lake .
description
Before the Livingstone Falls , the breakthrough through the Lower Guinea Sill, the water-rich Congo accumulates to form a body of water, the Malebo pool, which is around 30 km long, 21 km wide and a maximum of 16 m deep. The Malebo pool is 272 meters above sea level. d. The water has numerous wooded islands and is surrounded by about 600 m high mountains .
The two capitals of Kinshasa ( Democratic Republic of the Congo ) and Brazzaville ( Republic of the Congo ) are located on the banks of the Malebo Pool, which forms the border between the two states with the Congo .
Due to the rapids lying downstream, the Congo is only navigable above Pool Malebo .
history
Henry Morton Stanley reached the Malebo pool on March 12, 1877 and founded the "Léopoldville Station" (today's Kinshasa) here in 1882 , which gradually developed into a regional trading center and starting point for expeditions to the Congo Basin . The Congo Railway , completed in 1898, still connects the Malebo pool area with the Matadi port .
