Under the Pitcairn Constitution , the British overseas territory is presided over by a governor appointed by the British monarch . Due to the small population of the Pitcairn Islands , the governor of Fiji was traditionally appointed from 1898 to 1970 for the Pitcairn Islands. Since Fiji's independence, the British High Commissioner in New Zealand has also been Governor of the Pitcairn Islands.
