List of popular initiatives in Austria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first referendum in Austria was carried out in 1964. So far - as of the end of November 2019 - 45 referenda have been carried out. 36 of them were successful in that the number of support signatures reached the legally stipulated minimum number from which treatment in the National Council is mandatory. This currently requires 100,000 signatures, up to 1981 it was 200,000. Alternatively, the votes of at least one sixth of those eligible to vote in three federal states are sufficient - a provision that has never been decisive before.

As of 2018

Since January 1, 2018, declarations of support can be signed in any municipality, regardless of the main residence, and also online using a mobile phone signature or citizen card . This applies to both the submission of a declaration of support and the signing of a referendum.

For a referendum, the support of one per thousand of the Austrian population is required so that the introductory proposal is accepted. As of 2018, this hurdle was 8,401 declarations of support.

In 2018, the following referendums were registered with the Ministry of the Interior:

  • Registered since January 29, 2018: Implement asylum in accordance with Europe
  • Registered since February 9, 2018: Women's referendum (spelling: women * referendum )
  • Registered since February 14, 2018: Don't smoke . For the protection of non-smokers. The complete ban on smoking in restaurants will remain in place in May 2018, as decided in 2015 as a federal act (Tobacco Act), operated by the Medical Association and Cancer Aid. - An online petition from Cancer Aid previously reached more than 460,000 supporters based on their name, place of residence and email address. - During the first 2 days of the referendum, the Ministry of the Interior servers collapsed under heavy loads. Within 72 hours, the number of 100,000 supporters was already exceeded in the funding application phase and the number required for treatment in the National Council was reached, which has only happened twice with other applications - in 1975 and 1986.
